#MarksMoments: This was my first time witnessing a polar bear so close to our ship, the National Geographic Explorer. The polar bear walked up and circled the ship, inspecting the unfamiliar object. Our hearts raced as we watched from the safety of the bow, and suddenly the bear stood tall on its hind legs. Its snout twitched as it caught our scent. The exhilaration we all felt that day was tru...

Found only in the Galápagos, marine iguanas are docile herbivores with wide-set eyes, spiky dorsal scales, and salt-encrusted heads. These unusual creatures ingest large quantities of saltwater along with the algae they eat. To prevent dehydration, special glands near their nose filter the saltwater out of their blood, then they 'sneeze' to expel the excess salt. This frequent action often leav...

#MarksMoments: Polar bears are one of the most recognizable and beloved animals in the world. Not only do they look adorable while rolling around in the snow, but there are practical benefits to this behavior as well.

What month was your expedition? We just did a mid-May expedition seeing many of the same areas but alas--only one bear, no bubble net feeding & only two whales in an 8 day expedition (6 days on the water). We added Glacier Bay & Petersburg to our itinerary (On different Lindblad/NatGeo cruise). We have only seen whales that close in Australia 24 years ago.

I spent two tours of approximately 3 months each on Hirta, St Kilda. 29/1/1959 to 13/4/1959 & 28/6/1959 to 3/9/1959 which included my 21st birthday on 11th July. I was part of the Royal Signals troop attached to the RAGWR (Royal Artillery Guided Weapons Range) to provide a radio link with the outside world, shortly taken over by the radio telephone system that was being built. I loved my time on the island & was planning to revisit in 2020 but Covid put paid to my plans. So, living in Australia & almost 86, I doubt I’ll get the opportunity to get there now.
